Who Do You Think You Are?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about what I tell myself and what others tell themselves on a daily basis. You can call it self-talk, lies from the Enemy, negative beliefs- whatever you call it, it is destructive. Many times, there is a record or a soundtrack running through our minds and it isn’t always pretty.

For me, I can get caught up in messages like, “There’s something wrong with me.” “I”m not enough.” “People think I’m weird.” “I’ll end up alone.” Or, “I can’t do this.” I’m not talking about an audible voice… it is the subtle and often times subconscious or low conscious level messages that are easily taken in on a daily basis. I went to my first life coaching module in July and one of the teachings was on “gremlins.” What are gremlins you might ask? According to the dictionary, a gremlin is: “an imaginary mischievous sprite regarded as responsible for an unexplained problem or fault.” Thinking of these messages in terms of gremlins personifies the message and enables you to see the messages more clearly. Why is this important? It is because the more aware we are as people the more we can choose what to think about and dwell on.

Many of us try to be healthy and choose to eat foods that are nourishing for our bodies and yet, we pollute our minds by believing lies and negative self-talk on a daily basis. Picture a fat gremlin figure like Jabba the Hutt feeding you negative messages and you eating them without question.

Sometimes these messages become so second nature that they feel true but the reality is they are false. When was the last time that you meditated on the fact that you are beautiful, one-of-a-kind, loved, accepted and enough exactly as you are? Maybe it is time to do some positive self-talk? We laugh at the old Saturday Night Live skit with Stuart Smalley where he looks in the mirror and says, “I’m good enough. I’m smart enough. And, dog-gone it, people like me.” But, what if affirmations like that are part of what we actually need to be doing?

The Bible talks about what we dwell on in Philippians 4:8:
“Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything is worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”

I’m rooting for you and I believe in you. Blessings and Love, Shelley
